Summary
Brazil's data protection authority, the Autoridade Nacional de Proteção de Dados, and Nigeria's Data Protection Commission have been granted membership in the Global Privacy Assembly (GPA). This decision was made public on October 20th during a private session at the 45th Global Privacy Assembly held in Bermuda.
The Global Privacy Assembly, originally known as the International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners, was established in 1979. For over forty years, it has served as the leading global platform for authorities focused on data protection and privacy. The Assembly's primary goal is to provide international leadership in these areas by connecting the efforts of more than 130 data protection and privacy authorities worldwide.
"By uniting the efforts of almost a hundred nations and organizations, we know that the GPA will be an excellent platform to bring up the most pressing issues of this theme and, most importantly, to unify the construction of sustainable, inclusive and innovative solutions in the field of data protection" - Juliana Müller, General Coordinator of Institutional and International Relations (Source: National Data Protection Authority) |
The vision of the Global Privacy Assembly is to create an environment where privacy and data protection authorities across the globe can effectively carry out their responsibilities, both independently and collaboratively, through the exchange of knowledge and supportive connections.
The Assembly aims to:
-
Be an exceptional global forum for privacy and data protection authorities.
-
Share knowledge and offer practical assistance to help authorities fulfill their mandates more effectively.
-
Provide international leadership in the field of data protection and privacy.
-
Foster connections and support initiatives at the domestic, regional, and international levels to empower authorities in safeguarding and promoting privacy and data protection.
The addition of Nigeria and Brazil to the Global Privacy Assembly is a pivotal indicator of both nations’ commitment to data protection and elevates them on the global stage.
